We Celebrate 25 Years of the Burgon Society at Charterhouse

On 11 October, we gathered at Charterhouse, London, to celebrate the Burgon Society’s Silver Jubilee - a joyful occasion marking 25 years of scholarship, fellowship, and shared passion for academical dress. Welcomed by our generous hosts, the Master Peter Aiers OBE and his team, and presided over by Professor Graham Zellick KC the day brought together members and friends from across the UK and beyond, many travelling long distances to join the celebration.
We welcomed new Fellows and enjoyed fascinating papers on medieval livery and the dress of Oxford’s Bedels, followed by lively conversation over a convivial dinner nearby. From our beginnings in 1999 as an online discussion group to our present status as an international learned society and registered charity, we have grown together—publishing, researching, and preserving the heritage of academical dress. Our Silver Jubilee was not only a milestone but a heartfelt celebration of community, continuity, and shared purpose.
