Drawing on examples from around the world, it shows how the cap and gown can reveal rich personal, social, and cultural stories. It also explores how academic dress can serve as a valuable lens for researchers across disciplines, opening new opportunities for collaboration. The talk concludes by examining the economics of academic dress and considering practical ways academics and businesses can work together to support future research.

What does academic dress mean to the people who wear it? This session continues the conversation on academic dress studies by exploring its sociology through the experiences of graduates, academics, and institutions. It examines how the cap and gown carry different meanings for different people, and how these are expressed through graduation ceremonies and social media. The session concludes by considering how academic dress and graduation have become powerful tools for branding academic achievement, both for individuals and for the institutions they represent. and status, and how this branding is ultimately passed on to close ones, social and professional circles, and society.

We are delighted to announce that bookings are now open for the Burgon Society's Annual Congregation, to be held on Saturday, 10 October 2026 in the historic neo-Gothic surroundings of the Waldegrave Suite, St Mary's University, Twickenham.
The day will feature a programme of talks, displays of academic dress, and opportunities to meet fellow Members and Fellows in a friendly and convivial atmosphere. The formal admission of new Fellows will take place as part of the proceedings. Refreshments will be provided through the day.
