The Revd Philip Goff Honoured at University of London Foundation Day

Burgon Founding Fellow Philip Goff was honoured with an award of a Fellowship h.c. (HFLon) by the University of London at its annual Foundation Day ceremony held on 19 November at the Senate House, London presided over by the Chancellor, HRH The Princess Royal. it was very convivial occasion, full of warmth and celebration. Professor Peter Galloway in proposing Philip for the Fellowship highlighted his role in establishing the Burgon as a learned Society, and we were delighted to be mentioned at such an august occasion.
Fr Goff has designed robes for the University and its federation members, as well as for other universities. In 1997, he led the revisions to the University of London’s academic costume and wrote the current dress regulations in the University Ordinances. His 1999 book, University of London Academic Dress, which includes a foreword by HRH The Princess Royal, remains an important reference in the field. Foundation Day marks the anniversary of the University’s first royal charter, granted by William IV on 28 November 1836. The ceremony includes the conferment of honorary degrees and fellowships, a tradition that began in 1903 with recipients such as the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King George V and Queen Mary).
